Rita Hayworth: The life and legacy of a Hollywood icon
Rita Hayworth, born Margarita Carmen Cansino on October 17, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York, remains a defining figure of Hollywood’s Golden Age. The daughter of Spanish dancer Eduardo Cansino and American dancer Volga Hayworth, she began her career as a dancer at a very young age.
Hayworth achieved cinematic stardom through iconic roles in films such as ‘Gilda’ (1946), ‘Cover Girl’ (1944), and ‘The Lady from Shanghai’ (1947). Her early life was marked by intense professional training; by age eight, she was appearing on stage, and by her early teens, she was performing in nightclubs in Tijuana and Agua Caliente, Mexico, to bypass California child labor laws.
Biographers note that her early years in Mexico were characterized by a demanding performance schedule and significant personal trauma involving her father. Hayworth passed away on May 14, 1987, at the age of 68, following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
