Ritabrata Banerjee to remain West Bengal Leader of Opposition

Ritabrata Banerjee will continue to serve as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly following a ruling by the Calcutta High Court. A division bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta declined to interfere with the decision made by Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose, who had recognized Banerjee as the leader of a ‘rebel but majority’ faction within the Trinamool Congress.

The court has referred the matter back to a single bench, which is directed to reach a decision within the next two months. Until that final ruling is issued, Banerjee’s status as Leader of the Opposition will be considered ‘temporary.’

The legal dispute stems from internal conflicts within the Trinamool Congress. While party president Mamata Banerjee had originally intended for Sovandeo Chattopadhyay to hold the position, a faction led by Banerjee emerged following his expulsion from the party for alleged anti-party activities. The controversy involves conflicting claims regarding factional leadership and the legitimacy of communications sent to the Assembly Speaker.
