Ritchie Blackmore reunites with Deep Purple for surprise performance

Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore reunited with Deep Purple on August 12 at the Jones Beach Theater near New York. This performance marked his first time playing with the band since 1993, ending a 33-year period of estrangement.

Blackmore initiated the reunion by sending a message to vocalist Ian Gillan, suggesting he join the band for a single song to demonstrate to fans that there was no lingering animosity between the members. The group performed the classic “Smoke on the Water,” with Gillan introducing Blackmore as an “immortal founding member” and a “great legend.”

Reflecting on the emotional experience, Blackmore noted that he prioritized the symbolic importance of seeing old friends over technical perfection. He remarked, “I think we realized it could be the last time we would see each other, perhaps.”
