River cruising trends highlight short Rhine trips and Danube tours

European river cruising is seeing a trend toward shorter, more flexible trips. Data from 2025 indicates a high volume of short-duration travel, with approximately 91 million trips lasting two to four days being undertaken.

Thurgau Travel is expanding its offerings to include river cruises lasting between three and six days, particularly on the Rhine. These trips target both first-time cruisers and experienced travelers through themed voyages, such as trips focused on the Elsass region or Bavarian Oktoberfest atmosphere.

Longer itineraries remain popular on the Danube, focusing on cultural experiences through major European cities. Key routes include passages through the Wachau valley in Austria, visiting landmarks like Melk Abbey, and providing extended overnight stays in Vienna and Budapest to allow for deeper exploration of their historic sites and architecture.
