River ecosystems face drought threats in Montenegro and Slovenia

Environmental concerns are rising in Montenegro and Slovenia due to drought conditions affecting river ecosystems. In Montenegro, the Sport and Fishing Club 'Lipljen' has issued an urgent appeal regarding the Breznica River. The water level has fallen below the critical biological minimum due to high temperatures and prolonged summer drought, threatening local biodiversity and the spawning grounds of the native brown trout. The club has proposed that the Pljevlja water utility company implement planned water consumption restrictions to prevent permanent damage to the ecosystem.

In Slovenia, the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation is addressing water retention issues through the Natura Mura–Drava project. To combat the effects of drought and improve groundwater levels, approximately 370 hectares of aquatic and riparian habitats will be restored along the Mura and Drava rivers. The project includes the renaturation of river sections, the restoration of side channels and oxbow lakes, and the creation of new ponds and floodplains to act as a natural sponge for water retention.
