Paraná and Uruguay rivers flood multiple regions due to El Niño

Heavy rainfall driven by the El Niño phenomenon has caused significant flooding across the Paraná and Uruguay river basins, affecting parts of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

In Paraguay, the rising Paraná River has forced the evacuation of families in Ciudad del Este and Ayolas. Authorities, including the military and Itaipú Binacional, are providing humanitarian assistance to displaced residents. In the Misiones department, farmers have been forced to harvest crops early to salvage what they can before the water reaches their fields.

In Argentina, the Uruguay River's rising levels have triggered emergency responses in Entre Ríos and Corrientes. The province of Entre Ríos has declared a water emergency. In Concordia, several families have been evacuated as the river approaches critical thresholds. In Corrientes, towns like Monte Caseros and Paso de los Libres are facing rising waters, leading to road closures and service disruptions.

Additionally, the Iguazú River's flow has surged, exceeding 12,000 cubic meters per second. This extraordinary increase has led to the preventive closure of tourist circuits at Iguazú Falls National Park to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. Authorities continue to monitor hydrological conditions as heavy rains persist.
