River Jones sues NYC for $1M after Rikers Island shower fall
River Jones, a man convicted in the 2022 killing of Los Angeles rapper Avanti Frowner, is suing New York City for $1 million following an incident at Rikers Island. Jones filed a petition in Bronx Supreme Court alleging he sustained serious injuries to his head, neck, and face after slipping in a shower at the George R. Vierno Detention Center in December 2025.
Jones claims the injury occurred because the facility failed to provide mats on the shower floor. However, court-filed medical records present a different account, noting that Jones presented with left elbow pain and denied head trauma or loss of consciousness. The records indicate he underwent surgery for a broken elbow and was discharged without complications.
Jones was one of four men indicted in the 2022 Bronx pharmacy attack that killed Frowner, also known as Money Gang Vontae. While initially charged with second-degree murder, Jones was convicted of first-degree gang assault. He is currently held at the Gouverneur Correctional Facility and is eligible for parole in 2029.
