River maintenance and dredging operations underway in Santa Catarina

Efforts to mitigate flooding risks through river maintenance are underway in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The CT SATC technological center has completed a diagnostic study of the Urussanga River, identifying approximately 590 points of obstruction that hinder water flow. This study covers nine municipalities, including Urussanga, Içara, and Jaguaruna, providing a work plan and budget estimates to guide immediate cleaning and long-term monitoring efforts.

In São João Batista, the local government has begun dredging the Tijucas River to address decades of siltation. The operation involves cleaning, clearing obstructions, and removing accumulated materials such as stones and sediment. Using hydraulic excavators and dredges, the project aims to remove an estimated 360,000 cubic meters of material. These actions are part of a broader prevention strategy to mitigate the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon and heavy rainfall.
