River otter spotted in Bronx River for first time in 100 years

A wild river otter has been spotted in the Bronx River for the first time in over a century. The Wildlife Conservation Society confirmed the sighting after a motion-activated camera captured the animal in late June. Experts believe the sighting is a juvenile otter exploring new territory.

Scientists consider the otter an “indicator species,” meaning its presence suggests a healthier freshwater ecosystem with sufficient clean water and fish populations. This return follows decades of cleanup efforts by the Bronx River Alliance and local volunteers, who have worked to remove industrial waste, tires, and garbage from the waterway. The sighting follows the recent return of North American beavers to the same river system.

While some social media commentators have attributed the animal's return to the leadership of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, representatives from the Bronx River Alliance emphasized that the recovery is the result of over 50 years of community-led restoration and pollution mitigation.
