River otters return to Lake Tahoe region

River otters are experiencing a dramatic return to the Lake Tahoe region after being largely absent for several decades due to being trapped out of the watershed. Will Richardson, Executive Director at the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), noted that the organization has been tracking this resurgence for approximately 15 years through staff observations along the Truckee River and community reports.

The Tahoe region supports seven species of mustelids, a family of mammals that includes the North American River Otter, American Badger, Wolverine, Long-tailed Weasel, American Short-tailed Weasel, American Mink, and Pacific Marten. While some species, such as the river otter and mink, are well-adapted to aquatic life, they all share physical traits like elongated bodies and dense fur. Richardson noted that while otters are a natural part of the local ecosystem, they are sometimes difficult for residents to distinguish from mink.
