River Plate set to sell Paraguayan midfielder Matías Galarza as European clubs show interest

Paraguayan midfielder Matías Galarza, 24, impressed at the 2026 World Cup – scoring against Turkey, providing an assist and helping Paraguay upset Germany before exiting to France. River Plate confirmed he will not be part of coach Eduardo Coudet’s plans for the upcoming season and is exploring a sale. The club retains 70 % of his economic rights after purchasing the player for roughly €4‑5 million (about $5 million) in 2025.

Galarza’s World Cup performances have attracted several suitors. A formal offer was submitted by Spanish side Getafe for around €4.5 million, while clubs from Italy’s Serie A, including unnamed teams, and Brazil’s Cruzeiro have also expressed interest. His agent, Regis Marques, said “we have several offers… one of them is Italy,” and negotiations are ongoing. River’s board has indicated a asking price of about $6.5 million. The midfielder had a short loan spell at Atlanta United in the United States, which ended without a purchase option being exercised, and he returned to River in early 2026.
