River Plate launches massive squad overhaul after Copa Argentina loss

Argentine club River Plate announced a sweeping squad overhaul following a 3-1 defeat to Aldosivi in the Copa Argentina. Coach Eduardo Coudet said the purge, affecting around 15 first‑team players, was a “decision of the club” and not his alone. The list of excluded players includes Paulo Díaz, Germán Pezzella, Fabricio Bustos, Giuliano Galoppo, Kevin Castaño, Matías Viña, Maximiliano Salas and others, with some already moving abroad.

The restructuring aims to reduce the roster size, free budget for new signings and improve overall quality. In addition, striker Sebastián Driussi suffered a calf tear, sidelining him for several weeks and causing concerns ahead of the season’s start. Coach Coudet also left the future of midfielder Juanfer Quintero open, stating he must report to training on Thursday, amid speculation about his departure.
