Uruguay River Flood in Corrientes Evacuates 29 Residents

The Uruguay River rose to 8.64 m at Paso de los Libres, surpassing the 8.5 m evacuation threshold. Seven families, totalling 29 people, were evacuated from the Pescadores neighbourhood, while three families (six people) self‑evacuated in Santo Tomé. Local civil‑defence officials, including Corrientes Defence Civil director Bruno Lovinson, kept the area under permanent monitoring and prepared Army shelters capable of housing up to 750 people.

The high water also forced the suspension of the river crossing between Monte Caseros (Argentina) and Bella Uńión (Uruguay). Defence Civil of Paso de los Libres, led by Jorge Jiménez, moved evacuees to the 5th Infantry Regiment base, which has four pavilions with a capacity of 250. Authorities expect the families to remain in the shelter for at least a week, as water levels, though slightly lower at 8.59 m, may rise again.
