River Yealm Beer Race continues South Hams tradition

The River Yealm Beer Race, an eccentric tradition in the South Hams region, continues to bring village rivalry and rowing competitions to the waters between Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. Running for over half a century since its inception in 1971, the event is characterized by rowing boats, local festivities, and a sense of community inheritance.

Local organizers James Martin, Matthew Hoskin, and Rob Hockaday, who took over the event in 2022, describe themselves as custodians of a tradition that serves as a rite of passage for those growing up in the area. The race features various themed teams and vessels, maintaining a long-standing relationship between the twin villages and the river.
