Rivers State: 10 feared dead in Kula boat collision
At least 10 people are feared dead following a boat collision in the Kula waterways of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, Rivers State. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening during a confrontation between local youths and men in military uniform.
Reports indicate the clash arose when community members attempted to halt operations at an oil mining lease site due to an alleged oil spill. Protesters demanded environmental remediation and compensation from a businessman linked to local contracts. The situation escalated when uniformed personnel arrived in gunboats to move a vessel; during the encounter, one of the gunboats reportedly struck a community boat, causing it to capsize.
While eight people were rescued alive, search efforts involving police and traditional leaders have continued through Thursday to locate the missing. The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation to determine the exact number of casualties and the specific circumstances of the tragedy.
