Rivers State 2026 budget stalls amid political disputes

The Rivers State 2026 Appropriation Bill, a N1.854 trillion proposal titled ‘Budget of Resilience for Growth and Development’, remains unpassed more than a month after its July 10 presentation to the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly.

Reports suggest the delay stems from a political impasse and unfulfilled agreements between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and lawmakers. Sources and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike have alleged that the governor failed to meet commitments regarding lawmakers’ entitlements, benefits, and constituency projects. Some reports indicate that the lack of appropriated funds has already impacted the execution of state projects, such as the multi-billion-naira Ring Road.

The Rivers State Government has officially denied reports of a fresh rift, stating through the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, that the budget is simply undergoing the normal legislative process. The administration maintains that Governor Fubara is working closely with the legislature and urged the public to disregard ‘negative narratives’ regarding a confrontation between the executive and legislative arms.
