Rivers State: At least 37 dead in illegal oil siphoning tragedy
At least 37 people died, with some local reports suggesting the death toll could reach 43, after inhaling toxic fumes during an illegal oil siphoning operation at Okari Jetty in Rivers State, Nigeria. The incident occurred around midnight on Thursday, September 3, 2026, in the Okrika Local Government Area.
According to the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), a large group of over 200 youths arrived at the jetty in wooden boats to tap into a pipeline. The pipeline transports petroleum products from the Indorama Eleme Petrochemical facility through the Port Harcourt Refinery to vessels loading for export. The high-pressure release of fumes during the siphoning process caused many to collapse, with some reportedly falling into the river and drowning.
Rivers State Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have confirmed the incident and launched investigations. While authorities are working to verify exact casualty figures, several individuals remain missing, and some bodies have been observed floating in the river. The tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers of illegal oil bunkering and economic desperation in the Niger Delta region.
