Rivers State government condemns alleged forced virginity testing of students
The Rivers State Ministry of Education has condemned reports of alleged forced virginity testing involving female students at Government Comprehensive High School (Senior Secondary) in Taabaa, Khana Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred on September 17, 2026, when individuals claiming to represent a traditional institution visited the school. They allegedly selected 16 female students for the examinations under the pretext of providing scholarships and school supplies. The attempt led to objections and peaceful protests by the students.
In a statement issued by Permanent Secretary Mina Tele-Ikuru, the ministry emphasized that no individual, traditional institution, or private organization has the authority to subject students to such testing. The government described the reports as disturbing and noted that the alleged actions violate the dignity, privacy, and fundamental rights of the students.
An investigation has been launched to establish the facts and ensure appropriate action is taken against those found culpable. School management also expressed strong opposition to the practice, stating it contravenes the rights of the girl child.
