Rivers State political tensions escalate amid Wike and Amaechi disputes

Political tensions in Rivers State continue to escalate as various factions clash over leadership and ethnic representation. Samuel Nwanosike, a loyalist to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and former Ikwerre Local Government Area chairman, has issued threats regarding the 2027 elections. Nwanosike accused former Governor Rotimi Amaechi of failing to benefit the Ikwerre people despite his extensive political career, stating that the political battle would extend directly to Amaechi’s personal sphere.

Separately, Udengs Eradiri, former president of the Ijaw Youths Council Worldwide, addressed the political rift between Nyesom Wike and current Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Eradiri characterized the dispute as an internal Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) matter rather than an ethnic struggle for the Ijaw people. He noted that the attempt to ethnicize the conflict caused divisions between the Ijaw and other ethnic groups in the state. Eradiri also remarked that Fubara’s emergence as governor lacked a collective decision-making process from the Ijaw ethnic nationality, noting that Wike did not consult the community before selecting his successor.
