Rivers United goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena returns to training
Rivers United goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena has returned to full training following a lengthy injury layoff. The Super Eagles goalkeeper underwent career-threatening surgery earlier this year, which required a rehabilitation program funded entirely by the club.
Rivers United reported that the medical procedure and subsequent rehabilitation cost approximately ₦14 million. The club stated that covering these expenses is part of a ‘player-first approach’ intended to remove financial burdens so athletes can focus on recovery. This follows a similar support model previously used for right-back Ebuka Akobundu.
Ozoemena’s return provides a boost to the squad as they compete in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) under head coach Finidi George. The goalkeeper had previously missed opportunities to feature in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) due to his knee injury.
