Riverside County expands fentanyl education in schools

Riverside County is implementing a new fentanyl prevention curriculum in schools following California Assembly Bill 2429. The program consists of eight 50-minute lessons per semester designed to educate students on the dangers of both illicit and pharmaceutical fentanyl. The Palm Springs Unified School District is among the systems adopting the curriculum, which includes training for teachers and informational resources for parents.

While Riverside County has seen a 54% decrease in fentanyl-related deaths—dropping from 545 to 251 fatalities in a recent 12-month comparison—health experts warn the synthetic opioid remains a major threat. Harm reduction advocates are emphasizing the use of drug testing strips to identify fentanyl before consumption and the importance of naloxone (Narcan) to reverse overdoses when they occur.
