Rivian Q2 2024 Earnings Beat Estimates, Raises Delivery Forecast

Rivian Automotive reported second‑quarter revenue of $1.66 billion, up 27 % year over year and above analysts’ average estimate of $1.51 billion. The company delivered 12,194 vehicles in the quarter, an increase from 10,661 a year earlier, and raised its full‑year delivery outlook to 65,000‑70,000 units, up from the prior 62,000‑67,000 range. Production at the Normal, Illinois plant rose to 12,613 vehicles, and capital spending was lowered to $1.7‑1.8 billion from $1.95‑$2.05 billion. Software and services revenue grew 37 % to $515 million, including $308 million from the joint venture with Volkswagen. CEO RJ Scaringe said the conversion rate of reservations to orders for the R2 Launch Edition was “meaningfully above” internal projections and expects the R2 to generate a positive automotive gross margin in the back half of the year. The R2 SUV began customer deliveries in June, with record demo drives and strong feedback. Despite the earnings beat, Rivian’s shares fell about 9.6 % after hours, reflecting investor concerns over cash burn and ongoing market challenges. The company also announced a partnership with Uber to develop up to 50,000 autonomous R2 robotaxis, targeting a launch in 2028.
