Rivian climbs to second place in US electric vehicle sales
Rivian has significantly increased its market share in the United States, rising from tenth place in the third quarter of last year to second place in the third quarter of 2026. According to data from Cox Automotive, Rivian surpassed major competitors including Hyundai and Chevrolet, trailing only Tesla in individual manufacturer sales.
The company's growth was driven largely by the introduction of the new R2 model, which recorded 3,456 sales in its first quarter on the market. This success helped offset declines in the R1S and R1T models. Additionally, Rivian saw a substantial 220.9% increase in sales for its EDV 500 and 700 delivery vans during the third quarter.
This surge comes during a period of overall decline in the US electric vehicle market, which saw total sales drop by 30% during the first three quarters of the year. Analysts suggest that while many established manufacturers have scaled back production or delayed electric projects, Rivian has capitalized on the shifting landscape.
