Rivian expands vehicle lineup, software, and competitive analysis

Rivian is expanding its product and software capabilities. The company is preparing to launch the R2, its first global mid-size electric SUV, which is expected to enter the European market. The R2 Performance model features 656 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, with a starting MSRP of $57,990.

To unify its fleet, Rivian is rolling out Rivian OS 2.0. This software update, which includes a redesigned infotainment system and Waze integration for real-time alerts, will be brought to existing R1S and R1T models. Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid confirmed the update aims to create a single core operating system across all Rivian vehicles.

Additionally, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe revealed that the company performed a teardown of the Xiaomi SU7, a popular Chinese electric vehicle, to analyze its construction. Scaringe described the Xiaomi platform as a “well-executed, heavily vertically integrated technology platform,” noting that the Chinese manufacturer's success is largely driven by lower labor costs and significant government subsidies for manufacturing plants.
