Rivian introduces captain's chairs for 2027 R1S model
Rivian has announced updates for its 2027 model year R1S and R1T vehicles, headlined by the introduction of second-row captain’s chairs for the R1S SUV. Described by the automaker as its most requested feature, the new six-seat configuration includes a center pass-through that allows passengers to access the third row without folding seats. The captain’s chairs are heated, fold flat, and include individual armrests and push-to-release cup holders.
In addition to the new seating, Rivian is implementing a simplified trim structure that aligns with its R2 platform, moving away from differentiation based on motor counts. The update also includes a new standard wheel for the R1T and a new paint color. While a seven-seat bench remains an option for certain trims, the captain’s chair configuration will involve additional costs and, in some trim levels, requires the purchase of the Sound + Vision package.
