Rivian launches affordable R2 EV, eyes mass‑market challenge to Tesla
Rivian has begun deliveries of the R2, its first sub‑$47,000 electric vehicle aimed at a broader consumer base. The model marks the company's shift from premium trucks and SUVs toward the mainstream market, with the Georgia factory slated to ramp up production. CEO RJ Scaringe hinted at future variants, including the R3 (targeted for 2028) and a possible R4, while noting the platform could support additional body styles.
The launch comes as U.S. EV demand slows after the removal of federal tax credits and traditional automakers trim their electric‑vehicle investments. Rivian posted $1.38 billion in revenue for Q1 2026, an 11 % year‑over‑year increase, but continues to record operating losses. Its stock has fallen about 20 % this year. Industry analysts see the R2 as Rivian’s best chance to gain market share from Tesla and BYD, though a near‑term displacement of Tesla is regarded as unlikely.
