Rivian rolls out RivianOS 2 software update for R1 and R2 models

Rivian has launched RivianOS 2, its largest software update to date, aimed at unifying the software stack across its R1 and R2 vehicle lineups. The update introduces a redesigned user interface featuring a vertical status bar, a reorganized settings menu, and a global search function.

A key technical distinction exists between vehicle generations due to hardware limitations. The new R2 and second-generation R1 models utilize Unreal Engine 5 to provide real-time, high-fidelity 3D visualizations of the vehicle and its surroundings. In contrast, first-generation R1 models will continue to use Unreal Engine 4 to maintain system responsiveness on older hardware.

Navigation improvements include real-time route alerts via Google Maps, which display information regarding speed cameras and police activity sourced from government data and user communities. Additionally, newer models benefit from a hybrid edge computing solution for AI tasks to reduce latency.

Rivian is also introducing a subscription service called Connect+, priced at $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year. This subscription is required to access specific features such as a dedicated weather application with air quality indexing and the Mobile Live Trips routing tool.
