Rivian unveils plans for R3X sport SUV and Tesla‑like driver‑assist system

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the company will launch a sport‑oriented R3X SUV built on the R3 platform, featuring a three‑motor powertrain and production slated for the new Atlanta plant by the end of 2028. The model follows earlier announcements of the R2, R3 and R2T, and is positioned for high‑performance rather than pure off‑road use.

Scaringe also announced that Rivian will roll out a supervised point‑to‑point driver‑assist feature later this year that he likens to Tesla’s Full Self‑Driving. The capability will be available on all Gen 2 vehicles and the upcoming R2. An unsupervised version is targeted for the following year, with a robotaxi fleet planned for 2028 in partnership with Uber.
