Rivian unveils R2 SUV and plans upgraded Power Cabinet 2.0 for fast‑charging network

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe announced the launch of the R2 SUV, positioned as a lower‑cost, mass‑market model with projected annual sales of over 50,000 units. The vehicle is built around an AI‑first platform, using Rivian’s proprietary Universal Hands‑Free (UHF) system that combines ten cameras and five radars. Scaringe said the company is targeting Level 4 autonomous driving by 2028, with incremental upgrades such as UHF version 2 later this year and full point‑to‑point hands‑free capability expected by the end of 2026.

In parallel, Rivian detailed a forthcoming upgrade to its DC fast‑charging infrastructure called Power Cabinet 2.0. The new cabinet will replace the power electronics behind charging dispensers, aiming to lower cost and simplify installation, which Scaringe believes will trigger a rapid acceleration in the rollout of the Rivian Adventure Network. The network currently comprises roughly 150 sites with 1,017 stalls across the United States, achieving 98 % average uptime and serving both Rivian and non‑Rivian EVs. Rivian also noted a recent partnership with developer Caruso to add more than 150 public fast‑chargers at retail locations.
