Rivian's Compact R3 and R2 Face Design, Cost and Efficiency Hurdles Ahead of European Rollout

Rivian unveiled its compact R3 crossover at a design meeting in Irvine, showing a retro‑inspired shape reminiscent of the original Golf and targeting a sub‑€40,000 price for the European market. Production is planned for a new Georgia plant costing about $5 billion, with full‑capacity operation not expected until 2028, adding pressure to meet a 2027 launch window. Volkswagen, through its joint venture with Rivian, is investing up to $5.8 billion to gain access to Rivian's Zonal‑E‑electronics architecture, with the first VW model using this tech, the ID.EVERY1, slated for 2027.

Separate testing of Rivian's larger R2 SUV against the Tesla Model Y showed significantly higher energy consumption, with the R2 using 18‑26 percent more power at highway speeds and about 25 percent more in city‑type simulations. Rivian plans to introduce the R2 in Europe first, followed later by the smaller R3, as it aims to compete with established brands such as VW and Tesla.
