RIVM issues smog warning for parts of the Netherlands

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has issued a smog warning for Friday, affecting the northern, eastern, central, and Brabant regions of the Netherlands. The poor air quality is expected to be caused by summer smog, which occurs on warm, sunny days when sunlight reacts with pollutants to create excess ozone.

Individuals with asthma, respiratory issues, children, and the elderly are particularly at risk. Potential symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. The RIVM advises vulnerable groups to avoid heavy outdoor physical exertion, such as intense sports, during Friday afternoon and evening.

Conditions are expected to improve by the beginning of the evening as the wind shifts to the north, bringing cooler and cleaner air into the country. No further smog is anticipated for the upcoming weekend.
