Riyad Mahrez makes competitive debut for Al-Shamal SC
Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez made his official competitive debut for Al-Shamal SC during a 0-0 draw against Lusail in the sixth round of the Qatari championship. Entering the match in the 64th minute, the 35-year-old former Manchester City captain marked his return to professional play after an absence of more than three months following the World Cup.
Mahrez noted that while he felt a sense of satisfaction in returning to the pitch, he requires time to regain his match rhythm. He emphasized a gradual approach to his reintegration, stating, “The objective is not to rush my return or my playing time; it must be done progressively, step by step.”
The player also commented on the challenging playing conditions, noting the heat compared to the climate-controlled environments of the World Cup. Following the match, Mahrez expressed gratitude to the Al-Shamal supporters and the Algerian community in Qatar for their warm reception.
