Riyadh experiences explosions following aerial alerts

Explosions were reported in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday following aerial alerts issued to residents. The Saudi Civil Defense activated sirens in the capital and the neighboring city of Al-Kharj, instructing citizens to remain indoors due to a hostile aerial threat.

Reports indicate that the strikes targeted oil tanks near Riyadh Airport and other sites, resulting in large plumes of black smoke over the city. While Saudi Arabia has frequently been targeted by Houthi forces from Yemen, this marks a significant escalation as it is the first time an air alert has been activated within Riyadh itself during the recent intensification of attacks.

The Houthi movement, which controls much of Yemen, has been engaged in conflict with the Saudi-led coalition since 2015. Recent strikes have raised questions regarding the effectiveness of the Kingdom’s defensive fortifications in protecting its political and economic center.
