Rákosrendező MÁV site demolition begins to address illegal squatting

Authorities have begun the demolition of abandoned buildings at the former MÁV site in Rákosrendező to address long-standing issues with illegal squatting. The XIII District Municipality has allocated significant funds to dismantle the site, which has caused distress for over a thousand local residents living near nearby apartment buildings, kindergartens, and playgrounds.

József Tóth, the mayor of the XIII District, reported that recent joint inspections with police found fewer residents on the site than in previous months. The area, located on the western edge of Rákosrendező along Tatai út, was vacated by MÁV two years ago to clear the way for the ‘Mini-Dubai’ urban development project involving investors from the United Arab Emirates.

While the project's direction has shifted, officials confirmed that the properties are now owned by the capital. David Vitézy stated that obstacles to demolition have been removed and work will proceed as soon as Budapest is ready to take over the area.
