RM Margono Djojohadikoesoemo proposed as National Hero

Raden Mas Margono Djojohadikoesoemo, the founder of Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) and grandfather of President Prabowo Subianto, has been proposed for the title of National Hero. The proposal is being championed by the Seruan Eling Banyumas (Serulingmas) community group and supported by the Central Java provincial government.

To support the nomination, community members and academics held a cultural pilgrimage and prayer session at Margono's grave in Banyumas, Central Java. Proponents highlight his historical role as an economic fighter who sought to liberate the Indonesian people from colonial financial systems and establish monetary sovereignty through the founding of BNI.

Officials from the Central Java Social Services Department have clarified that the proposal is based on Margono's historical contributions rather than his familial connection to the current president, noting that the process has been ongoing since early 2025. The final decision regarding the title remains the prerogative of the President.
