Römisch-Germanisches Museum renovation set for 2030 completion

The general renovation of the Römisch-Germanisches Museum (RGM) is now scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2030. This updated timeline is based on the construction schedule provided by the general contractor appointed in July.

The extensive project covers approximately 11,000 square meters of gross floor area, including interior and exterior work on the building, roof, and facade, as well as the renewal of technical systems and surrounding outdoor areas. To minimize risks and interface issues, the scope has been expanded to include museum fit-outs and the protection of major remaining exhibits, such as the Dionysos mosaic and the Poblicius tomb.

Construction activities have already begun within the building. In September 2026, the site setup and construction fencing will be reorganized, requiring additional space at Kurt-Hackenberg-Platz. Concurrently, the City of Cologne is working to move approximately 250 heavy-duty exhibits from storage into the 4,500 square meter exhibition space.
