RML Hospital performs first Deep Brain Stimulation surgery

Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in New Delhi has successfully performed its first Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery. The procedure was conducted on a 55-year-old Under Secretary from the Nepal government who has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease, characterized by tremors and difficulty walking.

The surgery, which lasted approximately eight to nine hours, involves implanting electrodes into specific brain structures to deliver electrical impulses that regulate abnormal movement. A battery-powered device is typically implanted in the chest to manage the stimulation.

Medical professionals noted that DBS is often used when Parkinson’s symptoms are not adequately managed by medication. The procedure at RML Hospital provided a significantly more affordable option compared to private medical centers, where costs for the same treatment can range from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh.
