RMU Zenica workers to receive systemic support via World Bank project

Vedran Lakić, the Federal Minister of Energy, Mining, and Industry, has announced that the World Bank's 'Just Transition in Selected Coal-Rich Regions in BiH' project has officially become effective as of September 3, 2026. This development establishes the legal and financial framework necessary to begin implementing support measures for workers at the RMU Zenica brown coal mine.

The project aims to provide a comprehensive systemic solution rather than temporary aid. Key measures for the affected workers include the payment of outstanding salaries, the integration of years of service (work seniority), and the payment of severance packages.

Additionally, the plan guarantees income for workers who remain employed in technical, security, or other essential roles during the mine's closure process. These employees will receive regular salaries with all taxes and contributions paid for the duration of their engagement. The minister emphasized that the goal is to ensure no worker at RMU Zenica is left without their legal rights and entitlements.
