RNA Molecule SAILR Acts as Emergency Switch in Human Macrophages
Researchers from the University of Würzburg and the University of Marburg have identified an RNA molecule called SAILR that functions as a safety mechanism in macrophages, the immune cells that ingest pathogens. Under normal conditions SAILR binds a protein essential for macrophage survival. During bacterial infection the RNA is rapidly deactivated, prompting the infected macrophage to undergo programmed cell death and thereby removing the niche that bacteria could use for replication.
The discovery suggests that SAILR could serve as a biomarker for severe inflammation and may become a target for therapies that modulate macrophage activity, either enhancing pathogen clearance or limiting tissue damage. The study was led by Marburger professor Leon Schulte and Würzburg researcher Jörg Vogel.
