RNA research advances potential treatments for genetic diseases

Researchers at the University of Toronto have developed a next-generation RNA therapeutic approach using transfer RNA (tRNA) to treat genetic diseases caused by nonsense mutations. These mutations introduce premature stop signals that prevent cells from producing full-length proteins. By engineering tRNA to read through these signals, the team demonstrated the ability to restore protein production in preclinical models of cystic fibrosis.

Separately, researchers at SINTEF are working to simplify the development of mRNA-based drugs. Because many drugs fail in human clinical trials due to differences between animal models and humans, a new method utilizing human blood aims to identify effective drug candidates earlier in the process. This could streamline the development of mRNA treatments for cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
