RNA technology advances in cancer vaccines and genetic disease treatments
Advancements in RNA technology are showing promise in treating both cancer and various genetic disorders. Merck and Moderna are testing a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine designed to target specific tumor mutations. In clinical trials involving melanoma patients who underwent surgical tumor removal, the vaccine—when combined with Merck’s immunotherapy Keytruda—showed potential in reducing the risk of recurrence and metastasis.
The personalized vaccine works by sequencing a patient's tumor to identify up to 34 specific mutations. This allows the treatment to train the immune system to recognize and attack those specific cancer cells. Researchers believe this approach may also be effective for other high-mutation cancers, such as lung and colon cancer.
Separately, new preclinical research published in Science highlights the potential of transfer RNA (tRNA) to combat dozens of hereditary diseases. This technology aims to address nonsense mutations, which account for approximately 11% of human genetic diseases. By correcting errors where a premature stop signal is generated in the genetic code, tRNA therapies could potentially treat conditions like cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Dravet syndrome.
