RNA technology expands from mRNA vaccines to new therapeutic uses
The evolution of RNA technology is moving beyond the widespread use of messenger RNA (mRNA) seen during the COVID-19 pandemic into new therapeutic frontiers. While mRNA vaccines gained global prominence by instructing cells to produce specific proteins without altering DNA, they were built upon decades of research, including the Nobel Prize-winning work of Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman regarding RNA base modifications.
Newer developments are focusing on transfer RNA (tRNA) as a therapeutic tool. Unlike mRNA, which carries genetic instructions, tRNA acts as an adapter during protein synthesis. Researchers are exploring 'suppressor tRNAs' designed to bypass premature stop signals caused by genetic mutations. This technology aims to allow ribosomes to continue protein translation, potentially correcting the functional impact of certain genetic disorders.
