RNC revokes CBC media credentials for midterm convention

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has revoked the media credentials of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and Radio-Canada for its upcoming midterm convention in Dallas, Texas. The decision follows controversy regarding an internal CBC memo that instructed staff to avoid labeling the September 11 attacks as “terrorist acts” unless the term was explicitly attributed.

The RNC stated that allowing an organization that avoids characterizing the 9/11 attacks as terrorism would be an “insult to the American (and Canadian) families, victims, and survivors affected by the attacks.” While the CBC has since reversed the directive, the RNC has maintained its decision to bar the broadcaster from the two-day event scheduled for September 9 and 10.

The convention is expected to feature speakers including Donald Trump and JD Vance, focusing on the party's agenda ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. CBC's head of public affairs, Chuck Thompson, described the revocation as a “disappointing development” and stated the broadcaster is reviewing the decision in hopes of a reconsideration.
