RNLI updates lifeboat fleet to meet changing maritime demands

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has announced a 15-year Lifeboat Fleet Strategy to modernize its assets in response to changing coastal usage patterns. Data from 2017 to 2024 indicates that 98% of the charity’s lifeboat responses occurred within 10 nautical miles of the shore, suggesting a shift toward the need for inshore and coastal capabilities.

In Devon, five stations are scheduled to receive new vessels by 2030. Plymouth will receive a new Coastal class boat to replace its Severn class vessel, while Appledore, Salcombe, and Torbay will transition to Shannon class all-weather boats. Ilfracombe is set to receive an Atlantic 85 Mk3 high-speed rigid inflatable.

In Wales, the strategy includes replacing Trent class lifeboats in Fishguard and Holyhead, and the Tamar class in Angle, with the new Coastal design. Rhyl will receive an Atlantic 85 Mk4 to replace its Shannon class boat. The RNLI notes that the new Coastal class is designed to be more sustainable and cost-effective, capable of operating up to 10 nautical miles offshore with a range extending to 25 nautical miles.
