Rønne water culture house project abandoned due to budget constraints
Plans to construct a new water culture house at Nørrekås in Rønne have been abandoned after eight years of development by the Foreningen Bornholms Vandkulturhus. The decision follows challenges regarding funding and the local municipality's decision to postpone allocated funds of 30 million DKK through successive budget agreements.
Concerns are growing regarding the long-term availability of swimming facilities in Rønne. The existing Rønne Svømmehal is 48 years old and faces ongoing technical issues. While the municipality has allocated funds for renovations intended to extend the facility's lifespan by five to ten years, critics argue this is merely a temporary fix that does not address the fundamental need for a sustainable, long-term solution.
Ann Rubæk-Nielsen, chair of the Culture and Local Community Committee, expressed regret over the project's cancellation but noted that the current economic reality on Bornholm makes such large-scale investments difficult. The municipality must now investigate how to secure future swimming services for the region.
