Río Bueno Mayor Luis Reyes held in preventive detention for corruption

Luis Reyes, the Mayor of Río Bueno, has been placed in preventive detention following formal charges of aggravated bribery and money laundering. The Los Ríos Prosecutor's Office alleges that Reyes received approximately 120 million pesos, both directly and indirectly, into his bank accounts from business owners in exchange for favoring them in municipal public tenders.

The investigation involves five other individuals, including businessman Héctor Meza, who is also in custody after allegedly depositing 27 million pesos to Reyes. The court ordered preventive detention, citing that Reyes's freedom poses a danger to societal security.

Defense attorney Juan Enrique Urrutia announced plans to appeal the detention order to the Valdivia Court of Appeals. Meanwhile, Chilean Deputy Leandro Kunstmann has called for a serious and rapid investigation, noting that the alleged illicit enrichment and manipulation of tenders undermine public trust and the proper use of municipal resources.
