Río Cuarto trial begins for woman accused of killing son

A trial has commenced in Río Cuarto, Argentina, against a woman identified as Juárez, accused of the homicide of her twelve-year-old son, Aarón Benjamín Alaniz. The incident occurred on August 6 of last year in the Alberdi neighborhood, where the defendant allegedly used a kitchen knife to inflict fatal wounds on the child.

A central focus of the trial will be the defendant's mental health. While the defense has argued that she may not be legally responsible due to psychiatric history, including claims of schizophrenia, a Mental Health report determined she suffers from dysthymia. The report stated that her pharmacological and therapeutic treatments did not prevent her from understanding the nature of her actions.

The proceedings, overseen by Judge Nicolás Rins and a popular jury, are expected to last three days. If found guilty of aggravated homicide, the defendant faces life imprisonment.
