Río Grande inaugurates Germán Asencio Agroexperimental Farm
The municipality of Río Grande has inaugurated the “Germán Asencio” Municipal Agroexperimental Farm, a 3,000-square-meter site designed to strengthen local food production. The project recovers the historic “Los Pinos” property, which was managed by producer Germán Asencio for over four decades.
Rather than focusing solely on direct production, the facility serves as an agroexperimental platform for research, experimentation, and training. The goal is to generate knowledge and technical tools that can be transferred to local producers, universities, and technical agencies to overcome the specific climatic and geographic challenges of Tierra del Fuego.
José Luis Iglesias, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Production of Río Grande, emphasized that the initiative is a vital step toward food self-sufficiency for the city. Mayor Martín Pérez described the site as a strategic resource intended to serve as a “beacon” for improving the city’s productive capabilities.
