Río Grande launches pilot strawberry production project
The Municipality of Río Grande, in collaboration with Río Grande Activa and technical support from INTA, has launched a pilot project for the production and multiplication of strawberries. The initiative involves the incorporation of 2,000 San Andreas variety plantlets to evaluate their adaptation to the rigorous climate of Tierra del Fuego.
The project aims to establish a local multiplication center to produce high-quality plantlets adapted to regional conditions. This seeks to reduce dependence on imports from other regions, such as Northern Patagonia, which currently increases costs for local producers. The cultivation will utilize drip irrigation, peat substrate, and mulching to optimize resources.
Beyond technical testing, the initiative intends to create a value chain involving small producers, cooperatives, and family businesses, providing a sustainable economic alternative for the northern part of the province.
