Río Grande Naval Base celebrates 77th anniversary
The Río Grande Naval Base, known as “Pioneros Aeronavales en el Polo Sur,” celebrated its 77th anniversary with a ceremony attended by high-ranking Argentine Navy officials, municipal authorities, and Malvinas War veterans.
A central part of the commemoration included the inauguration of a monument dedicated to those fallen in the Malvinas conflict. Additionally, a commemorative plaque from the Naval Center was unveiled to honor Lieutenant Marcelo Gustavo “Loro” Márquez, who was posthumously promoted and died on May 21, 1982, during operations against the British frigate HMS Ardent.
The ceremony was led by several naval commanders, including Rear Admiral José Alberto Martí Garro and Captain Diego Alejandro Mazza. The event also recognized the historical significance of the base, which was originally established in 1949 as the Río Grande Aeronaval Station.
